Rajkot Raiyadhar demolition peaceful barring some protest

Finally Rajkot Municipal Corporation(RMC) started demolition drive at Raiyadhar slums in presence of 2 ACP, 5 PI, 20 PSI, 54 constables, 65 home guards, 10 gasmen, 1 water canon, 1 Vajra armour vehicle and 1 videographer.

15 persons of Congress supported Zupadpatti Mahaparishad were detained as they were protesting the demolition drive.

RMC wants to replace slums with affordable housing units built under public private partnership(PPP) model.

According to Municipal Commissioner Vijay Nehra who is the man behind this project and related demolition drive, builder will maintain the scheme for seven years. Nehra said those who couldn’t participate in tender process are provoking slum dwellers. Some people own more than one slum units and they have rented some of them. They too are opposing the project. Otherwise majority of slum dwellers favor construction of livable houses instead of slum. Nehra said those opposing demolition will be captured in video and they will not get any benefit of this scheme. Nehra said a committee will be formed to monitor the construction work executed by builder.

Expenses of demolition are beared by builder Cube Construction Private Limited under PPP scheme.

The private company has won this tender by offering Rs. 21 crore prise. Slum deweller will be alloted 300 sq ft flat, road, gutter, light, water, health centre and kinder garten.

Today’s demolition involves two plots.
