Considering the drinking water situation, and also in parts irrigation water situation, the present spell of rainfall is very useful for Saurashtra region which is mostly dependent on drinking water supply through Narmada pipeline network otherwise.
Overflow of Bhadar dam has created flood like situation in low lying area at present, but it is just temporary. The water filled in the dam in June itself – which is considered initial period of Monsoon in Gujarat – is great news for people of Rajkot, Gondal and surrounding areas.
Another major dam that supplies water to Rajkot city is Aaji-1. The dam is likely to overflow by midnight as per an estimate. Nyari-1 has received 8 ft inflow of water.
Gondal town near Rajkot has received over 90% of average season’s rain in June itself. Ashapura and other smaller dams were filled with water in earlier rounds of showers. Today the biggest source of water called Veri Talav is overflowing. All smaller check dams are already overflowing in this belt. Overflow of Chhaparwadi is another latest development. Munjiyasar dam is also overflowing.
All dams of Amreli district including Thebi and Vadi are full. Situation is not different in nearby Gir Somnath and other districts.
All this is due to deep depression over Arabian sea that moved towards north-north western direction and hit Saurashtra coast.
