Rumors keeping villagers awake in rural Ahmedabad-Kheda

Due to rumors circulated through verbal communication, whatsapp and SMS, there’s tension in rural areas on periphery of Ahmedabad city in Gujarat for last few days.

Yesterday, the situation went worse in Apruji village where locals attacked police for “inaction against goons” that according to villagers, “come to attack villagers in dark hours and abduct village woman.”

At least 10 policemen were injured and police van was damaged by agitating villagers. Police had to lob 5 teargas shells to control the crowd. Two persons have reportedly suffered injury in police firing in this village. Police had reportedly fired 16 rounds.

Due to varieties of rumors that mainly suggest, Dafers, naxals, terrorists, goons come from other states for attack, theft and kidnapping of women, the villagers in fear move with desi weapons every night to guard their village in rural Ahmedabad, Kheda, Dahegam belt.

In related development, Ahmedabad’s Naroda police station has filed case against a particular mobile number for spreading WhatsApp messages suggesting that terrorists have entered Naroda, Odhav, Nikol areas of city and they kill whoever come across, and police has issued advisory to not to move outside in 01-05 am hours, this message should be forwarded to save lives, Gujarat government, Jay Hind.

Police is struggling to counter this mass hysteria.

Early in the morning, police conducted combing in Apruji village near Kathlal and recovered country weapons like sticks, swords etc.
