The Collector of Chhota Udaipur district of Gujarat had a narrow escape today when a tractor and trolley allegedly belonging to local sand mafia laden with illegal sand hit a vehicle in which he was traveling.
The police later seized over half a dozen such vehicles and nabbed a person for interrogation.
Collector Jenu Devan along with several officers had gone to the banks of river Orsang in connection with a raid against illegal sand mining there. He was traveling in the official vehicle of the SDM when the incident took place, Chhota Udaipur SP Jaipal Singh Rathore said.
Rejecting the reports that it was a deliberate attempt of attack, the SP said the tractor driver tried hurriedly to flee the spot with his vehicle when he saw the team of officials. ‘The fearful driver left his vehicle on a road with steep rise and fled. The tractor slid back and hit the Bolero vehicle on the left side of its front part. The Bolero was partially damaged, however, no one was injured in the accident,’ the SP said.
The spot was hardly half a kilometer from the Collector office of this small eastern town, the SP said adding the police later nabbed over half a dozen tractors involved in sand mining.
