Pharma students to decide whether their projects are patentable or not and if patentable then how to draft and file the Provisional Patent, Gujarat Technological University (GTU) has started series of two days Workshop on “Patent Search, Drafting and Filing” called as “Patent Clinic” at Ahmedabad & Gandhinagar.

Till date total 16 Patent Clinics have been organized successfully and more than 320 Patents have been filed by students and faculty members associated with GTU affiliated colleges in field of IPR.

Admission procedure For 2nd Batch of PGDIPR has been started from today. In the syllabus there is inclusion of Chinese Patent System and African regional Patent system, which is first time to be taught by any University of India.

GTU Innovation Council (GIC) has started its mission for Intellectual Property (IP) literacy for faculty members and students since September 2011. Till today GIC has organized more than 64 workshops for faculty members and students. By all such workshops and seminar, at present GTU has a very large pool of nearly 4650 trained faculty members in the field of IPR and Patent.

GTU has subscribe for commercial patent search database and faculty development program on “Patent Search & Technology Landscaping (PSTL)” has been started since June 2015.

Dr. Akshai K. Aggarwal, Vice chancellor said that GTU is planning to announce starting of Two New Certificate Courses in: a) IPR & b) IP Valuation & Management. Research in engineering and pharmacy stream should contribute for creating a better world for tomorrow. While creating awareness of IPR is the first step, and developing IPR Policy is the second step, third and most significant step is managing IPR process within an engineering and pharmacy college is the setting up and running of in-house IPR cell.

The GTU vision is to make the laboratories and workshops of our colleges as the research and development laboratories of all the SMEs in Gujarat. When a SME is able to get a product or a process developed or improved through the faculty member and the students of any College, the industry must be advised about the value of the Intellectual Property (IP) developed though the effort, he said.

On the other side, union Government has said that the final draft of the National IPR Policy has been circulated for inter-ministerial consultation and will be put up to the Union Cabinet for approval after getting the comments. India’s IPR Policy shall fully protect patent, GI and copyrights. The draft policy focuses on stronger enforcement of IPR by increasing the manpower strength in IP offices and reducing the pendency of IPR filings. Most of the offices have done away with manual interface as all applications, queries and decisions are made online.
