Amid the spree of pro-reservation rallies of the politically strong Patel community in Gujarat, Shree Samast Gujarat Brahm Samaj, an outfit claiming to represent Brahmins in this western state today advocated for the need to make the economic condition as the only basis for providing reservation and demanded the formation of Brahmin Economic Development Board for the uplift of the weaker section of the community.
Addressing a press conference here today president of the front, Mr. Sailesh Joshi, said that the reservation should be purely on economic grounds and now the time has come to change the system. Brahmin community is facing very tough time today and children of the community don’t get equal opportunity in school, college admissions and employment just because of the provision of reservation.
He said, ‘the key five demands of his front are: to give reservation to Brahmins on economic grounds, give reservation and provide required facilities to students of the community in educational institutions, form Brahmin Economic Development Board for the uplift of the community, provide salaries to priests of temples in Gujarat on the basis of standards set by Tamilnadu Government and not to appoint any other caste except Brahmin as a priest of temples.
Mr. Joshi, however, extended support to pro-reservation rally of the Patidar community slated to be held on Agust 25 in Ahmedabad.
Mr Joshi said that various programmes of protest, rally, bike rally and public gathering have been organized at district and taluka level across Gujarat to raise our demand of reservation on economic grounds. We will also send 51,000 post cards to the President and submit a blood written application to the Governor of the state to give further impetus to the campaign.
He further informed that almost 30 years ago the then Minister Mr. Trambakbhai Dave (Trollywala) first made efforts for reservation on economic grounds but after his unfortunate demise, the cabinet had not sanctioned the GR. Then, Shree 17 Taluka Audichya Sahastra Mandal, Vadhvan Brahmsamaj raised the same issue before Hon’ble Sugnaben Bhatt Committee but the government has not considered her opinion till now.
As the government ignored our voices, we have decided to choose the medium of agitation to pursue the government, he said.
