Surat
As monsoon is nearly on its end and there’s no possibility of fresh inflow, storage of water in Ukai dam in south Gujarat is steady at 4508 mcm. On an everage, in one year 4,000 mcm water is utilized from Ukai dam storage.
A meeting was held by Surat municipal commissioner Milind Torvane on utilization of Ukai water upto 16 June 2016.
As per an estimate Kharif(monsoon) crops will need 772 mcm water while Rabi(winter) crop will need 2662.39 mcm water and summer crops will need 1632 water from Ukai dame. Surat city will utilize 300 mcm water. This will leave 700 mcm water in next summer in Ukai dam. The problem will occur only if there’s no good rain in monsoon 2016.
It should be mentioned that Ukai had received inflow enough to achieve the top level, but as precautionary measures water was released to sea as per prescribed rule-book measurements. For now the rule book measurements are uplifted, but there’s no rain.
