Alleging that the ‘desperate’ Congress party was trying to re-fuel the pro-reservation agitation of the Patel or Patidar community for political gains in Gujarat, the ruling Bhartiya Janata Party today claimed that it will get a ‘bigger’ victory than that of the last time in the coming Local body polls due to be held in two months time.
Talking to media persons after the first day of the four day meeting of the state unit of the party in its headquarters in Koba near Gandhinagar being held to discuss various issues including the preparations for the local body polls. BJP spokesperson and state vice president I K Jadeja said the BJP with its development plank would get an overwhelming victory. ‘It would be bigger than that of the last time,’ he claimed.
To a query regarding the effects of the Patel agitation on the poll prospects the BJP spokesperson said, ‘ every thing has both positive and negative aspects. I don’t want to go in to the details but am sure that our party is going to get a much bigger victory. The desperate congress which has lost all ground beneath its feet in last 15 years in the state was now behaving desperately. They are trying to refuel the agitation hoping to gain political mileage of it. Many of its MLAs and office bearers are trying to keep the agitation going.’

Mr. Jadeja said that every section of the society including those connected with the agitation have welcomed the benefit scheme for the economically weaker section announced by the chief minister. ‘Some people ask why the agitation was not dying despite such a nice scheme for all. We understand that it is being pulled on for vested interests. Congress was giving air to it.’ he said.
Talking about the meeting Mr. Jadeja said that all the district units of his party would participate in it ‘On day one a total of 10 such districts including Ahmedabad city, Ahmedabad district, Surat city, Rajkot city, Amreil, Jamnagar, Junagarh, Morbi and Surendranagar participated. In the coming three days other district units would participate in similar manner. BJP national vice president cum Gujarat in-charge Dinesh Sharma, state president R C Faldu and senior national functionary V Satish attended the meeting in which MPs, MLAs, related Board and Corporation chairman, Mayors, Zila Panchyat heads etc of the concerned districts were also present,’ he said.
Issues like the local body polls, the CM’s scheme and many other organizational subjects were discussed in detail on the first day of the meeting. The party also decided to launch many programs including a booth level contact campaign in the coming days and appoint ‘page pramukhs’ (a person for every page of the voters list of a particular booth) on the all the booths to further strengthen the party at the grass root level.
Meanwhile the sources said that the issue of Patel agitation was also discussed prominently during the first day meeting with most of the 10 district units being areas with sizable number of Patel voters.
