Even as 17 policemen allegedly held hostage of sorts by a high ranked police official were reportedly freed late night after a high voltage drama, the Gujarat DGP P C Thakur said that the allegations of forcefully locking them in a garage would be probed impartially and strict action would be taken against whoever found guilty.
Mr Thakur said that he had received reports that 1983 batch Bihar cadre IPS officer and ADG Mr Vipul Bijoy had allegedly locked 1 PSI, 12 ASI and 4 drivers in the garage of his residence situated inside the premises of the police training academy in Karai since early morning.
‘I talked to him once when he said that it was a matter related to indiscipline. We are looking in to it. He could not be reached then after. Two senior police officers were therefore sent to his residence. The whole episode would be probed impartially and no police official if found guilty would be spared howsoever high post he holds,’ the DGP said.
Meanwhile the home secretary Mr P K Taneja said that he has also received such complaints and the matter was being investigated.
The policemen were later freed by a team of police officers.
Their statement were taken on video camera.
Vipul Vijoy is former director of Karai police academy, but he continues to live in a bungalow in academy.
Today’s incident has sparked off fresh debate on orderly practice in police force under which junior rank police men are asked to do duty at senior police officer’s house for various non-police tasks of officer and his/her family.
