Ahmedabad

In a major success in its drive against fake currency rackets in Gujarat, the anti terrorist squad (ATS) of Ahmedabad police has recovered counterfeit notes worth over Rs 52 lakhs from Valsad in South Gujarat and arrested one person in this connection.

ATS DCP Himanshu Shukla today said that all the notes were of Rs 1000 denomination. ‘A total of 5225 such notes amounting 52 lakh 25 thousand were recovered during a raid in Valsad. One Umesh Rathod, an original resident of Surendranagar district has been nabbed in this connection,’ Mr. Shukla said.

‘The raid was conducted on the basis of information received from the BSNL employee, who was also a priest in a temple in Sayla town of Surendranagar district and was arrested on September 29 with over 102 counterfeit notes of Rs 1000 denomination,’ he said.

The DCP said that the notes that were recovered today were of a low quality and were not like the Pakistan or Bangladesh made fake notes.

He also said that the notes were printed serially in both the cases. ‘In fact the gang used to print notes serially and tried to replace it with the original one. We are conducting raids to seize the printers and other equipments and other members of the racket,’ he said.
