Ahmedabad
The Gujarat High Court today cancelled the candidature of a candidate of ruling Bharatiya Janata Party for Jasdan municipality in Rajkot district for his being underage.
The court of Justice A Qureshi rejected the candidature of candidate Haresh Chhayani as he has not attained the required minimum age of 21 years for contesting the polls. Chhayani, in his nomination paper filed on November 10, had submitted a copy of his voter’s identity card showing his birth date to be December 31, 1994. His main opponent and Congress Party candidate Harshad Kateshia had challenged Chhayani’s candidature in the court .
He has also produced a document from the municipality showing the BJP candidate’s birth date as October 31 the same year i e even less than his claim which already showed him underage.
The court had sought a clarification from the local body which said that it was December 31, 1994. Thus his age being less than 21 years the court cancelled his candidature.
