Birds injured due to kite strings being operated at govt, other facilities

100s of birds are killed and injured due to lethal kite strings – which work as flying knife – during the festival of Uttarayan across Gujarat. For last few years government and non-government organizations have started opening temporary operation theaters on Uttarayan to treat such birds. The incidents of bird injuries start before Uttarayan and continue to happen even after Uttarayan due to left over string lying on trees, cables and other places.

The state government has through its forest departments and animal husbandry department opened number of operation theaters across the state where volunteers can bring injured birds for treatment.

Presented int he video above is one such center at Bhutdi Jhampa Pashu Davakhana in Vadodara where over 90 pigeons have been brought for treatment during the kite flying festival.

According to Dr Damor who works here 78 birds were brought here on the day of Uttarayan while on Vasi Uttarayan 19 injured birds were brought by noon. The service will continue till 17 January.

Local Lok Sabha MP and district collector visited the camp on Uttarayan day. The birds that are able to fly again post treatment will be released on26 January. Scheduled class birds will be handed over to Forest department.
