Prime Minister Narendra Modi might visit Ahmedabad after a period of over one year to participate in the 13 th edition of World Spice Congress going to be held here from February 27 to 29, Assistant Director of Gujarat wing of the Spices board T P Prathyush today said.

The three day biennial event to be held at the Gujarat University Convention Center will be the first edition of the WSC in Gujarat. It is being organized by Spices Board, the flagship organisation under Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry. The theme for World Spice Congress 2016 is “Target 2020: Clean, Safe and Sustainable Supply Chain.”

Mr. Prathyush said that attempts were on to bring the Prime Minister either in the inaugural or the valedictory session of the prestigious event.

He said that Commerce Minister Mrs. Nirmala Sitaraman’s participation in the inaugural session has been finalized and co-ordination is on for bringing the Prime Minister also.

‘Though there is no final word about the PM’s visit as yet, we have been instructed to go through some routine security procedure and that is being followed,’ a senior police officer today said.

‘If Mr. Modi’s visit is confirmed then most likely a helipad will be made in the adjoining GMDC ground,’ the officer said denying to divulge any further detail at this juncture.

More than 250 domestic and International delegate will be present during the event. Out of total production 15% of spices are exported from India which contributes to 48% in volume and 43% in value of the world spice trade.

If Mr. Modi comes to participate in the event, it will be his visit to the city after a period of over a year. He had last come here during the ‘much talked about’ visit of Chinese Premier Xi Jinping in September 2014.
