Four MLAs of the main opposition Congress today introduced a private member bill in the Gujarat assembly which seeks reservation for economically backward classes in the state
The Gujarat Economically Backward Classes (Reservation of Seats in Educational Institution in the State and of Appointments and Posts in Services Under the State) Bill 2016 was introduced by Congress MLA Shailesh Parmar, Balwantsinh Rajput, Amit Chavda and Mrs Tejshriben Patel today on the 13th day of the ongoing budget session of the assembly.
The bill sought to provide for the reservation of seats in educational institutions in the state and of appointments and posts in the services under the state for economically backward classes and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto.
The bill also sought for constitution of a committee of maximum five members to study the various details regarding the reservation to the EBC community without interfering with the prevailing 49% reservation. It has asked for 20 % reservation to the EBC community in the government services.
Congress, buoyed by its performance in the local elections mainly owing to unexpected support from the supporters of the ongoing Patel reservation stir, had earlier announced to bring the bill.
Leader of opposition Shankersinh Vaghela today said that the party has fulfilled its promise by introducing the bill.
