‘Insecure’ non-Kashmiri students try to leave NIT campus in Srinagar

Srinagar

Expressing a sense of insecurity from local Kashmiris and local police, some students of NIT Srinagar hailing from other states today attempted to leave the campus that witnessed a clash last week but their bid to do so led to a confrontation during which police resorted to lathicharge.

A group of non-local students wanted to leave the NIT premises and return to their home states, saying, they were “not feeling safe” inside the campus, a police official said.

The local Kashmiri police official said security personnel on duty at the NIT tried to reassure the students that they were safe inside the campus but they were not pacified.

As the head of the security deployment was speaking to them, a few of the students allegedly resorted to patriotic sloganeering and even pushed him around, the official said.

He said the other police personnel then resorted to “lathicharge” to disperse the students who were “getting violent”.

The situation, however, was brought under control shortly, the official said.

In Delhi, HRD ministry officials said they were in touch with the management of the institute and the Director of the NIT has spoken to the students so that normalcy prevails.

On Friday last, the campus had witnessed clashes between local Kashmiri and non-local students from other parts of India over India’s defeat in the semi-final match in the World T20 tournament.

The defeat was reportedly celebrated by a group of Kashmiri students.

After the clashes, the NIT authorities had shut down the institute which was reopened yesterday. (With inputs from PTI)

“I appeal to the students to call on my number 09419149494 in case they have any problems on any front particularly on the security. We will look into that,” Deputy Chief Minister said.

“We assure the parents of these students that all measures have been taken for the safety of students,” he said.

Outstation students of NIT have alleged that they have been cane-charged by the local Kashmiri police men with brute forces and not allowed to move out of the NIT gate as they were holding protests.

“We had sat on dharna and were demanding meeting with HRD officials. We held meeting with NIT administration and they agreed to the demand. We were allowed freely to move out the gate,” said one of the students on condition of the anonymity.

“When we were going out of the campus as per the past practice, police did not allow us and resorted to cane-charge resulting in injuries to several students,” he claimed.

The students threatened to leave NIT and move to respective states as their safety and security is being compromised by NIT administration and Kashmir Police.

The NIT on last Friday was shut down temporarily after two groups clashed over Indian cricket team’s defeat at the hands of West Indies in T-20 World Cup.

The Kashmiri students had burst firecrackers in the lawns of NIT after the defeat of Indian team in their semi-final.

Following this, the non-local students reportedly hoisted Indian flag and took out march at the campus resulting in clashes with the local students.
