Chief Minister Anandiben Patel on Thursday asked BJP-ruled Surat Municipal Corporation(SMC) to send a sweeper to receive cleanliness related award instead of Mayor or Commissioner. Anandiben was speaking in a function organized by Samrasta Manch in Surat in which hundreds of sweepers from across the city were present.
“Due to their work, cities get award. And who goes to receive that award? Commissioner who hasn’t hold broom goes to receive award, or Mayor goes to take that award. Now onward when Corporations get award, do send a sweeper to receive that award. People will take note of it. When a Dalit woman would go and receive award from President or Prime Minister, just imagine how much respect she will earn?” Anandiben said.
Aanandiben also said that open defecation will attract fine soon.
“Toilet works are going to be completed gradually in all corporation areas and cities. We are going to make announcement that no person would use roads as toilet. If one is caught doing so, he/she will have to pay fine,” she said.
Anandiben asked SMC officials and others to make sure that children of sweepers complete their education and fund is available for that.
The Chief Minister and several saints had meal with sweepers.
