A special court here will pronounce its much awaited judgement in the 2002 Gulberg society riot case on June 2.
69 people including former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri, were killed when a mob attacked Gulberg Housing Society in Meghaninagar area of the city on February 28, 2002, a day after the Sabarmati express train burning incident in Godhara in Central Gujarat which sparked riots across Gujarat.
Counsel of the Supreme Court appointed special investigation team (SIT) R C Kodekar today said that special judge PB Desai would pronounce the verdict on June 2.
The court had heard the case on day to day basis on the instructions of the apex court which on February 22 this year allowed the court to pronounce its verdict in three months time.
Gulberg society case is one of the nine major cases of 2002 Gujarat riots which were probed by the Supreme Court-appointed special investigation team (SIT).
Earlier the apex court while instructing the special court to expedite the hearing of the case had also said that the judgement should not be pronounced without its permission. SIT had named 66 accused in the case. Nine of them have been in jail for the last 14 years.
The court has asked all the accused to remain present before it on June 2.
