Congress not to field candidate for Rajya Sabha by election in Gujarat

Main Opposition Congress won’t field any candidate for the Rajya Sabha by-poll in Gujarat, necessitated owing to the death of its own Rajya Sabha MP Pravin Rashtrapal, slated to be held on June 11 (if the need be).
The decision of the congress has virtually paved the way for unopposed election of Mr Parshottam Rupala, the BJP candidate who filed his nomination papers today.
Spokesperson of the Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee Manish Doshi today said that the state president and the leader of congress legislature party had discussed the issue and forwarded their opinion to the high command based on which the decision to not to field any candidate has been taken.
To a query, Mr Doshi said that morally the seat should go to Congress but as we don’t expect ruling BJP to pave the way for that and looking at the equation of the state assembly giving an upper hand to the BJP in case of a by election, we have decided to not to contest it.
