Making a major break-through in the sensational loot of goods worth over Rs 5 crore including 17 kg gold from a private courier’s (Angadiya Pedhi) truck in Bavla area, the Ahmedabad rural police has nabbed at least five culprits including a policeman in this connection and recovered around 70 % of the looted goods, S P Rural Nirlipt Rai said today.
Mr. Rai said that the master-mind of the gang was arrested from Sabrkantha district last night and later four more arrests were made overnight of whom two (including the policeman an SRP constable) were nabbed from Gandhinagar and one each from Surat and Patan.
‘They were tracked on the basis of mobile locations and other information. We are trying to nab the remaining three members of the gang who participated in the loot. The two guns looted by them from the guards of the courier firm, both 12 bore guns, have also been recovered,’ he said.
Mr. Rai said that the police would also arrest the others who did not participate in the actual loot but were part of the planning that was done meticulously for at least one month. Five teams were constituted by the police yesterday to track and nab the culprits.
A carrier truck of Ishwarbhai Becharbhai Angadiya Pedhi (private courier) of Ahmedabad was taking a total of 68 parcels including some containing gold to Rajkot in the night of June 3 when at around 1115 pm, soon as it reached Bavla-Adhoda crossing, the SRP constable stopped it. Later, other seven members of the gang seated in a car joined him and they overpowered the driver and two others in the mini truck. They also snatched the two guns of the guards in the truck and took the vehicle forcefully to a nearby secluded place in Bhayla village and off loaded 27 parcels containing 17 kg gold and other items and fled.
One of those nabbed was a former local courier firm’s employee indicating the hand of an insider in the loot.
Notably in 2013, goods worth around 23 crore of the same courier firm was also looted near the same spot. Police had arrested the culprits from North Gujarat at that time also.
