Ujjwal Nikam in Gujarat points out three problems that need immediate solution

Ahmedabad: Padmashri Ujjwal Nikam, the well known lawyer and special public prosecutor of Government of Maharashtra, who has been involved in prosecuting the accused of several important cases including the 1993 Mumbai blast and 2008 attack cases, today said that Terrorists deserve death Penalty as they are the enemies of humanity and perpetrators of heinous crimes to mercilessly kill the innocents.

Speaking at the first foundation day function of GLS Law College, here Mr Nikam who had also handled the prosecution in Gulshan Kumar murder case, Pramod Mahajan murder case, said that Terrorists are the enemies of humanity. They are the perpetrators of heinous crime. They mercilessly kill the innocents. Terrorism is a proxy war.

Inaugurating the programme at Thakore Bhai Desai Hall, he also shared his experience of prosecution trial of Ajmal Kasab, in the infamous 26/11 Mumbai terrorism case.

He said that three problems need to be addressed immediately.First, extradition of criminals based in foreign countries is extremely difficult; because the criminal laws of various countries are different.

Second, after rejection of mercy petition by President of India, the death penalty is never executed rather sent back to High Court for retrial. This is benefitting the hardened criminals.

Third, first track courts need to be set up for speedy trial; because under trial prisoners of terror related cases have specific interests in prolonging the trial.

Presiding over the function, Shri Sudhirbhai Nanavati, the Executive Vice President of Gujarat Law Society, urged the students for professional excellence. The inaugural issue of news magazine, Vidhan was released to commemorate the foundation day.
