With monsoon withdrawal inching closer, 17 districts rain still deficient, state deficiency 21% in Gujarat

Ahmedabad: With the withdrawal period of the South Western Monsoon from Gujarat just over 10 to 15 days (September 15 for most parts) away, the rainfall deficiency this season across the state is still 21 %.

So far more than half (17 out of total 33) of the districts in the state are under rain deficient category.

Though there is no favourable rain causing ‘system’ visible currently yet the second stage long range forecast of the Met department claims that most parts of the state would end up with normal figures by the end of the monsoon with some northern parts ending up with slightly less than normal figures in this regard.

The other hope of the recovery lies in the fact that this year is a La-Nina year in which ample rains normally takes place in September as well.

Ahmedabad Met Center Director Jayanta Sarkar today said that till today the rain deficiency in the state is 21%.

So far Jamnagar ( with 102.56%, the maximum figure percentage wise) and Aravalli (100.3%) are the two districts with excess rain figures with Valsad (94.58%) and Devbhoomi Dwarka (92.21%) closely behind but yet in the normal range with 12 other districts including Porbandad, Rajkot, Botad, Gir-Somnath,Bhavnagar, Amreli, Dangs, Patan (only northern district with normal rains so far), Panchmahals, Dahod, Mahisagar, and Gandhinagar.

Junagadh and Surendranagar are the two districts in Saurashtra with rain deficiency.

The state has so far received 70 % of its average rainfall. Region-wise North Gujarat (73.53%) tops the table followed by Saurashtra (70.45), South Gujarat (65.87%), Kutch (65.23%) and East Central Gujarat (64.35).

In terms of percentage Vadodara with 40.50% has lowest rains so far while in actual amount terms Morbi (only 291 mm) was at the last rank. Valsad tops the table in actual amount terms with 2036 mm so far. Ahmedabad was also among rain deficient districts with only 50.04% rains so far. It has received only 336 mm of rains against its annual monsoon average of 670mm.

But the good thing for the state so far is that most of the chief crop producing (cotton and ground nut) areas of the state including Saurashtra and Central Gujarat have received ample rains. They now need only a few spells of light to medium rains for a better crop.
