Demonetization:Congress’ chakkajam and rial roko in Gujarat seemingly lacked commoner’s support

Ahmedabad: Even as the road and rail blocking agitation (sadak and rail chakkajam) of the main opposition Congress on the issue of demonetization today disrupted traffic at several places across Gujarat , the home state of prime minister Narendra Modi, it seemingly failed to garner common man’s support.

Many people termed it a ‘useless publicity stunt’ of the party saying the step to demonetize Rs 500/1000 notes, though causing difficulty to the commoners, will help the country in longer run.

Jayesh Bhatt, a resident of Vadodara, said that though he was not a BJP supporter and had voted for Congress in the last local body polls in November 2015, yet the agitation of the party was beyond his comprehension.

‘This is one step of Prime Minister Modi which the whole country supports as it will wipe out the black money and fake notes and hit the terror funding. Congress should focus on other issues rather than beating the same drum again and again. The public itself is bearing the inconvenience and is eager to see its good results in longer run,’ he said adding that if the party keep opposing the move its image among commoners will take a big dip.

 

Ahmedabad resident Praksah Dave said that Congress’ protests seem like the efforts of a desperate outfit to gain some ground in Gujarat where it is virtually wiped out.

K A Chikani, a resident of Morbi in Saurashtra where Congress staged road block protest near old bus stand today, said, ‘it is really ludicrous. Congress has lost all sense. It is saying that demonetization is causing inconvenience to public and that is why the party is all out to protest it. But the party through its rail and road block is further causing inconvenience to the commoners only.’

Meanwhile, Congress staged rail and road blocks at several places across Gujarat today. It disrupted rail traffic in Surat, Nadiyad, Botad and several other places by stopping several trains as part of their rail roko agitation. The party workers also blocked roads at many places and also put burning tyres on the roads to disrupt the traffic to protest demonetization issue.

Hundreds of its workers and leaders were detained by police across the state during the agitation.
