Baffled at defeat, Gujarat Congress questions EVM’s credibility, demands re-introduction of ballot papers
November 30, 2016
Ahmedabad: Baffled at the humiliating defeat in recently held local body polls/by polls in Gujarat, the main opposition Congress today demanded re-election using ballet papers instead of earlier used EVM’s.
The party also demanded a probe in to whether the EVM’s were misused in favour of the ruling BJP which won the elections in overwhelming way.
All India Congress Committee Secretary Dipak Babaria today said that at a time when the political atmosphere in Gujarat was against the BJP government and anti government portests were on since last one year, the overwhelming win of the party in the elections has raised suspicion in the minds of Congressmen across the state about the credibility of EVM’s.
He said that in the past too BJP’s 17% mammoth vote gain in UP during general elections had raised such suspicions.
Babaria said that developed countries like the US and Japan were leaving EVM’s and re-introducing ballot papers for credibility reasons.
He said that if the BJP was so sure about its popular support the elections should be re organized with ballot papers.
Notably ruling BJP had won all the three local body polls and majority of seats in such bodies by polls in Gujarat simultaneously held on November 27.
