He said Gujarat has its foundation so strong that moving ahead on development path is very naturally happening here.

“We initiated Vibrant Gujarat Summit. Initially some were making fun of it. Today 70% states organize national or international level summits. Gujarat started it in 2003, and now 70% states are doing it, and each state does branding of its capacity and tries to attract maximum investment not through subsidy but through provision of developmental environment in the state,” PM Modi said.

Modi said, the country is experiencing new energy, new confidence for development and progress.

Modi praised Gujarat government and said, “the governments in Gujarat constantly maintained focus on development without getting involved itself into controversies and discussions. Whethr under Keshubhai or me or Anandiben or Vijaybhai, we have created a unique image and created a pathway in India. Now various states are compared with others. All states now feel that they should also progress.”

Speaking on Smart City scheme, the Prime minister said, “there has been an atmosphere of competition now. We choose to go on challenging route of competition in Smart City scheme. We asked cities to compete and emerge ahead of others in third party evaluation for selection in scheme. In the past this was unimaginable. Selection would take place based on political settlements. In the first phase of evaluation process, Benaras couldn’t find its place among selected cities, as challenging route was mandatory. It was believed that Benaras would be obviously selected as Prime Minister represents it in Lok Sabha. But no, challenge route was for everyone. This is not small thing.”

PM admired Gujarat government’s achievement of making various cities open defecation free.
