91 cases of farmers suicide on five years: Gujarat govt in assembly

Gandhinagar: Total 91 farmers committed suicide in Gujarat in last five years according to reply given by the government in State assembly.

According to Agriculture minister Chimanbhai Saparia’s reply, 3 farmers committed suicide due to failure of crop, 4 due to increased debt, 5 due to debt other than agriculture and 79 due to other reasons.

48 of total 91 farmers committed suicide in Jamnagar distrit while Junagadh stood second with 13 cases of farmers suicides. Other districts: Amreli 9, Rajkot 6, Bhavnagar 4, Mahesana 3, Surendranagar 2 and 1 each in Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Gir Somnath, Devbhumi Dwarka, Porbandar, Vadodara and Surat districts.

According to Congress MLA Paresh Dhanani, there are more cases of farmers suicides but police doesn’t register profession as farming in many cases.
