Communal violence in Savarkundla

Amreli: There has been fresh incident of communal violence in Gujarat. This one at Savarkundla in Southern Saurashtra.

A Muslim youth was attacked when he was meeting a Hindu girl at Mahakali chowk on Hathsani road in Savarkundla. Muslim youth escaped the place and came back to Manibhai chowk with his friends who all together forced shut down of Ram Janmotsav office and also attacked two shops nearby. Ram Janmotsav office has been opened by Shri Ram Janma Utsav Samiti here to celebrate Ram Janmotsav – Ram Navmi on April 5.

Hakubhai Vala who was working at Ram Janmotsav office alleged that three-four Muslim youths came to Ram Janmotsav office and forced shut down. They also attacked him and caused injury on left arm. They also attacked two shops nearby with sticks. They left the place only when Hindu youths rushed in.

The incident triggered communal violence in town following which stone pelting and soda bottle throwing incidents took place at Nesdi road, Sheth sheri and other areas. Police had to lobb three tear gas shells to control the mobs.

DySP Rajesh Parmar and other police officials rushed to the places of disturbance and deployed additional force. Ram Janmotsav office was later reopened but other shops in main bazar area remained closed.
