Deadly heat-wave reportedly kills crocodile in Gir forest
Junagadh:
Even as the number of cases of heat-stroke across Gujarat has increased manifold amid continuing heat-wave in many areas including Saurashtra prompting the forest department and zoo authorities to take extra-measures to keep the beasts cool, the unbearable heat has reportedly killed a crocodile in Gir forest area in Junagadh district.
The around 9 year old and 6 feet tall she-crocodile was found dead in a dried up check-dam in Malia Hatina taluka yesterday.
A forest official said that the body of the dead reptile was found in the dried up check-dam situated at a distance of around 65 km from here.
He said that normally a crocodile can live without water for a longer period yet the reptile found dead in the dried up dam seemingly could not bear the severe heat wave conditions coupled with the lack of water in its abode.
The body of the crocodile was sent to the animal care center in Amarpur for post mortem which indicated that it died owing to dehydration.
Notably maximum temperature in Junagadh for the past few days was reaching 42 to 43 degree Celsius which was not only above normal but somewhat abnormal for this early period of summer.
