A taluka panchayat member of Congress who was also the local convener of Hardik Patel led Patidar Anamat Aandolan Samiti (PAAS) died in a road mishap near Halvad in his home district of Morbi late last night, police said.
The body of Pankaj M Gopani (Patel) (23) was found inside his car which was badly damaged seemingly owing to a head on collision with some unknown vehicle. The accident seemingly took place around 3 to 4 km from his home village Ghanshyamgadh (from where he had contested the Halvad taluka panchayat poll for member post as Congress candidate and won). He was returning to his village from Halvad in his car and the accident took place at around 10pm.
Hardik and other PAAS leaders rushed to the residence of the deceased and claimed that it was an act of murder.
They claimed that the body of the deceased was found on the rear seat which was an evidence of it being a case of murder. His body was taken to Rajkot for post-mortem by forensic experts.
The deceased was also an ‘RTI activist’ who was running a ‘campaign against said mining mafias’.
