‘Passive’ monsoon not likely to advance in Gujarat for next 3 to 4 days
June 19, 2017
Ahmedabad: South Western Monsoon which had touched the southern tip of Gujarat before normal time of arrival almost a week ago but not advanced since then remaining passive, was not likely to be active and move any further for at least next three to four days, the IMD center here today said.
The before time arrival of Monsoon on June 12 (normal date of arrival is June 15) in Valsad had risen hopes of farmers who were already happy with the good amount of pre-monsoon rain in many parts of Gujarat but it could not move any further disappointing them.
Director of Ahmedabad Met Center and senior meteorologist Jayanta Sarkar today said that the Monsoon was not likely to advance any further in next at least 3 to 4 days. ‘We will have to wait for a system to advance the Monsoon which had on its arrival in Valsad weakened considerably. In the next 3 to 4 days also there was no advancement likely. There will only be scattered rain at isolated places. We will have wait for a system which moves the Monsoon further northward making it active again and cover the state of Gujarat,’ he said.
Notably, heavy rain had lashed many parts of South Gujarat and Suarashtra in the week before arrival of Monsoon but it was pre monsoon activity caused by an upper cyclonic system over the state. Many farmers in Saurashtra had even sowed their crops at that time and are now desperately waiting for next spell of rain.
However pre monsoon rain and continuous South Westerly moist wind has brought the temperatures across Gujarat considerably down. Only a few places in the state now record above 40 degree Celsius temperature.
