Gujarat govt announces subsidy for Potato and Onion producing farmers

Gandhinagar: In a major relief to farmers in Gujarat, the state government today said that it would provide a subsidy of Rs one per kg on sale of potato and onion to the farmers with an additional Rs one per kg for the sale of potato outside the state.

Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel told newsmen here today that a committee of ministers led by him has taken this decision.

He said that this year potato production the state was 39 lakhs ton while that of onion was 10 lakhs ton, which was a bumper production.
Owing to this the state government which has also assisted farmers in selling of Tuver, Cotton and other crops, has decided to help the potato and onion producers.

‘Within the limit of 300 quintals or 30000 kg, each potato grower will be provided Rs one per kg as subsidy when he takes out potato from cold storage for sale in the state and additional Rs one per kg (in all Rs 2 per kg) if he sells it outside the state,’ he said.

‘The state government has also decided to give Rs one per kg as subsidy to the onion growers too. Again within the limit of 30000 kgs, each of the onion grower who had sold his produce in any of the APMC yard in the state between March one this year to June 10, will be given this benefit on production of bill or gate pass or acknowledgement of weighing or receipt of the buyer,’ he said adding that the government has taken this decision to help the onion growers despite the expiry of selling season of onion.

The government has earmarked Rs 100 crore for the purpose, Patel added.
