‘Idle’ monsoon to be active again, Gujarat to witness good rains on June 24, 25:Met

Ahmedabad: Even as scattered rain is being witnessed in parts of Gujarat, the South West Monsoon which was lying idle since it touched the southern tip of Gujarat on June 12, is again going to be active owing to the formation of a cyclonic system which will spread it over almost all parts of Gujarat in next 3 days with likelihood of ‘good’ rain on June 24 and 25.

Director of Ahmedabad Met Center and senior meteorologist Jayanta Sarkar today said that there will be good rain in Southern, Northern and Saurashtra regions on June 24 and 25. ‘ The scattered rain would continue today and tomorrow at several places but the monsoon would make real advance in the state on June 24 lashing many places with good rains,’ he said.

He attributed strong moist south westerly winds at lower levels for the scattered rain at several places in last 24 hours and cloudy weather at many places.

The before time arrival of Monsoon on June 12 (normal date of arrival is June 15) in Valsad had made farmers who were already happy with the good amount of pre-monsoon rain in many parts of Gujarat quite even more happy but it could not move any further owing to weakening. Now the met prediction of its advancement across Gujarat in next two days is a very timely thing for them who were desperately waiting for another spell of rain to further their crop sowing activities.

Meanwhile many places in Gujarat saw scattered rains and drizzles in last 24 hours. Dhanera and adjoining areas in Banaskantha district and Dabhoi in Vadodara were prominent among them. Ahmedabad and many other places also witnessed drizzles amid cloudy weather.

Notably, heavy rain had lashed many parts of South Gujarat and Suarashtra in the week before arrival of Monsoon but it was pre monsoon activity caused by an upper cyclonic system over the state. Many farmers in Saurashtra had even sowed their crops at that time and are now desperately waiting for next spell of rain.

Temperatures across the state are continuing to remain near or below normal owing to South Westerly moist wind which has brought the temperatures considerably down.
