Aaji- 1 dam, the lifeline of drinking water supply to Rajkot about to over flow

Rajkot: The Aaji- 1 dam, which is deemed the lifeline of water supply in Rajkot city and was recently visited by Prime Minister Narendra Modi after it started receving Narmada Water through SAUNI project, has been filled up much before the expected time owing to heavy rain in the region.

It is only the 12 th time in last 40 years that the dam has been fully filled up.

According to state flood control room, the dam was about to overflow.
Some other dams in the state including one in Tankara of Morbi district has also overflown.

The water from river Narmada through the pipe line network of ambitious SAUNI yojana reached Aaji -1 dam on June 21. SAUNI whcih stands for Saurashtra Narmada Avtaran Irrigation, a project launched by the then Chief Minister Narendra Modi in September 2012, is to take excess water from Sardar Sarovar dam on river Narmada in central Gujarat to 115 dams of Saurashtra. PM Modi had visited the dam site on June 29.

The filling up of the dam which was almost empty for months, would to great extent take care of the water woes of the city.

Aaji 2 dam was also about to get filled up.
