February 06, 2018
The Jafrabad Muncipality in Amreli district of Gujarat, which has been clinched unopposed by ruling BJP, creating a history of sorts, will get a grant of Rs one crore from the state government under the Samras scheme.
On the last day for withdrawal of names for the seven ward (28 member seats) local body which was earlier also under the rule of BJP, the remaining 5 independent candidates in the ward number 7 today left the fray.
With this all the 28 seats have no other candidate except for those of BJP including the former Congress town president Chandu Patel who had turned coat and filed nomination as BJP candidate in the last moment.
Deputy Collector (Election) V M Prajapati, said that it was a rare occasion that a municipality has been elected unopposed. ‘As per the rule the municipality will get a grant of Rs 1 crore,’ he informed.
Interestingly the coastal town of Jafrabad is situated in Amreli district the home town of Congress MLA and leader of opposition in Gujarat Assembly Paresh Dhanani. BJP was wiped out in the December assembly election from the district.
Congress could not field candidate in the six of seven wards till the last date of filing of papers and with the withdrawal of names of the independents from the seventh ward the whole local body turned Samras in favour of BJP.
