Ahmedabad:
An Anti Cyclonic atmospheric system over North Gujarat and Adjoining South West Rajasthan and the dry and hot Northerly to NorthEesterly air has created unusually hot and ‘heat-wave’ like conditions in parts of Guajrat especially Coastal Saurashtra and Kutch region with temperatures at or above 40 º C recorded at at-least 14 places and Porbandar seeing the highest of 42.5 º C , Met Center Director and Senior Meteorologist Jayant Sarkar said today.
Unconfirmed reports also said that a woman going toward religious place of Pir Bhadiyad in Surendranagar district on-foot died of sun/heat-stroke. Police however registered the case of unnatural death.
Meanwhile, Surat today remained second hottest with 41.8 º C. At least 6 places recorded temperature of 41 º C or above across the state today. Ahmedabad saw a maximum of 39.9 º C which was 3.2 degree above normal.
Few places in the districts of Anand, Banaskantha, Sabarkantha, Surat, Valsad, Kutch and Rajkot experienced heat wave conditions while some in Junagadh, Dwarka, Porbandar and the union territory of Diu saw severe heat wave conditions today. Roads and other public places in the heat wave affected areas wore deserted look during afternoon today. The heat wave was mainly owing to lowered humidity in the atmosphere and dry wind.
The Met Director said that in the next 24 hours Porbandar, Junagadh and Dwarka districts and UT of Diu would experience sever heat-wave like conditions.
Other parts of coastal Saurashtra and isolated places in South Gujarat like Surat would also see heat wave conditions.
Sarkar said that the met department in its Seasonal Temperature Outlook has already made it clear that this year the summer in Gujarat, which falls in the core-heat-zone, would be more hot than the earlier year. The average temperatures this year are likely to be at least 1 º C above normal.
He said that the maximum temperatures which have soared to or above 40 degree Celsius at several places in last 24 hours (till 8 am this morning) with Veraval showing the highest of 41 º C, would see further rise tomorrow owing to dry hot winds prevailing at the lower level. ‘The winds blowing were devoid of moisture and were quite dry and were responsible for heat-wave,’ he said.
Notably in the last 24 hours ending a 8 am this morning Surat (40.8 º C ), Amreli (40 º C ), Porbandar (40.9 º C ), Rajkot (40 º C ), Veraval (41 º C ), Surendranagar (40.3 º C ), Kandla port (40.2 º C ) and Bhuj (40.2 º C ) saw mercury touching 40 or crossing above it.
