People rushed to jewelry shops and two/four wheeler showrooms for purchases on the occasion as a matter of belief.
A jewelry shop owner in CG road of Ahmedabad and a four wheeler showroom manager in SG highway locality here said that the sale surges on this day every year.
Rush was witnessed in many localities including Manek Chowk here and Jhaveri Bazar near Kotharia naka in Rajkot (Jewelers centers) and 150 ft ring road in Rajkot (where several showrooms of vehicles were situated). In other cities and towns including Surat, Vadodara, Jamnagar and Junagadh rush of customers in Jewelry and automobile showrooms were also seen.
Many of the Jewelry and car/2 wheeler showroom’s owners said that there was hardly any effect of cash shortage on the sale today, some including a large jewelry showroom in Alkapuri area of Vadodara said that the sale was at least 30% down as compared to last year. ‘People of-course were doing small-time shopping for Shakun but big purchases have come down,’ he said.
A local priest Prakash Dave said that Akha Teej was observed on the 3 rd day of sud (bright or moonlit) fortnight of Vaishakh month of Gujarati calendar every year. ‘It is believed that the whole day remains auspicious for beginning of any kind of work and one does not need to go to see a muhurta (auspicious timing) to do any thing this day. That is why people buy jewelry, vehicles and other valuables on this day. Marriages are also solemnized in large numbers today,’ he said adding that this day is also observed as the birth day of lord Parshuram, the main lord of Brahmin community.
Meanwhile processions (shobha-yatra) of Lord Parshuram was taken out at many places in the state by Brahmin community on the day. At some places small children were dressed up as lord Parshuram and other deities on the occasion.
