Gujarat court awards one year imprisonment to promoted IPS officer in custodial torture case

Bhuj:

A local court here today awarded one year imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 1000 to a promoted IPS officer and present SP rank official of Intelligence Bureau Manoj Ninama in an over one and a half decades old custodial torture case.

The court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate V D Modh, however, kept the punishment pronounced under section 323 of the IPC deferred for a month for allowing the convict to challenge his order in a higher court of law.

Ninama, who was promoted to IPS rank in 2007 was made accused in the case by Mohammad Ismail Sama in 2001. He was DySP at that time. He had allegedly beaten him up in a local police station pressurizing him to withdraw his objection in a land deal. The Chargesheet in the case was framed in 2014.

The court also ordered Ninama to pay Rs 10000 as compensation to Sama.
