Amreli: Local farmers led by Bharatiya Kisan Sangh protested the arrests of father-son duo in lion-nilgai deaths case.
Four days ago, on 31st May, 10 nilgai and 1 lion were found dead in deep well of Nanu Mulji Suhagiya’s farm near Likhala village of Savarkundla taluka in Amreli district. The forest department arrested Nanu Mulji and his son Arvind Nanu in this case and produced them in court. Both accused were sent to remand till 6th June.
The forest department investigation revealed that farmer father-son duo had installed electric fencing, most probably to prevent the entry of vermin nilgai in order to protect the crop. The farmers duo had also kept poisonous water in the farm. While a 5-year old lion was dead due to electric shock, 10 nilgais are believed to have died due to poisonous drinking water.
Apparently, in order to hide this act of crime, dead-bodies of lion and nilgais were dumped in well. More arrests are looming in this case, as one or two persons can not drag and dump 11 deadbodies, especially when father Nanu Mulji is 75-year old person.
The village is situated on the bank of river Jamvali. It is close to Nani Varad, Bhekra bid and Vadal vidi where 8-10 lions roam around. There has been not a single incident of lion attack on human in this area. 110 bigha fencing to protect crop against nilgai has been erected with the assistance of forest department. A 200-year old 50 ft deep well is open and it had 30 ft water level. Forest department was contacted about this incident by Likhala village’s Sarpanch Pravinbhai Radadia. Radadia was informed about the incident by farm owner. DFO Shaikra Begum, RFO Kapil Bhatiya, forester Pratap Chandu are investigating the case.
