A ‘weaker than expected’ monsoon likely to make ‘early’ entry in Gujarat, much rain not expected on arrival:MET Director

Ahmedabad:

The South West Monsoon is likely to reach Gujarat earlier than its normal period of June 15 but it would arrive in a much weaker form than expected earlier and there was less likelihood of any heavy rain in South Gujarat with its advent as announced by the met earlier..

The met has earlier issued heavy rainfall warning for 4 southern districts Valsad, Surat, Navsari and Bharuch from June 9 to 11.

Director of IMD center here and senior meteorologist Jayant Sarkar today said that the likelihood of heavy rain has lessened.

‘We still expect the arrival of Monsoon between June 9 (tomorrow) to 11 but it won’t be as strong as thought of earlier. There would be some rain of moderate nature in South Gujarat and South East Saurashtra but looking at the current atmospheric conditions it won’t be a heavy rainfall affair as predicted earlier,’ he said.

He also said that in the last 24 hours only a few places in South Gujarat saw light rain-fall which was less in intensity that expected earlier.

Notably, the met had on June 6 issued heavy rain warning for parts of South Gujarat on June 9 and 10.

Last year also the monsoon after its arrival in Gujarat (Valsad) on June 12, three days ahead of its normal time, weakened and became active after over a week. The monsoon last year later become very vigorous and even caused devastating floods in North Gujarat and Saurashtra with the total seasonal rainfall crossing 110% mark.
