Decline in water level in Narmada dam continuous but slow due to occasional inflow from MP

Vadodara:The water level of Sardar Sarovar Narmada dam reservoir, the life-line of water supply in Gujarat, has seen a decline of 1.22 meter in its water level since November 11 a day before the start of release of water from it for irrigation of rabi crops as instructed by the state government.

The water supply for irrigation of Rabi crops would continue till February 28 but as the live water storage currently was 2653.59 Million Cubic Meter (MCM) ie around 48% of its total live capacity, there won’t be any scarcity of drinking water supply in the areas populating around 3 crore people who are dependent on it.

As per the official figures, the water level this morning at 8 am was 127.52m which was 9 cm less than that of the same time yesterday. The outflow today was 20904 cusec and the inflow was 11336 cusec.

The water level will continue to decline despite occasional increase in inflow from Madhya Pradesh due to discharge of water caused by the running of hydel power units at Indira Sagar and Omkareshwar dams. But the occasion increase in inflow is helping the storage remain somewhat stable and slowing of decline in water level.

The water level in recent times had seen increase briefly during Diwali and Gujarati new year when it saw a rise of 11 cm (from 128.68m a day before Diwali on November 6 to 128.79m on New year day ie November 8). After that it has never once since any rise till date.
