AMC to collect only segregated waste from source from December 3

Ahmedabad: With a goal to make Ahmedabad the cleanest city of India by 2nd October 2019, the AMC (Amdavad Municipal Corporation) today made announcement that garbage segregation into dry and wet waste will be compulsory at source from 2nd December onward.

If the waste is not segregated by the society or individual houses or other units, the corporation will refuse to collect the same, said municipal commissioner and mayor in a press conference, adding that a massive awareness campaign will be launched on 2nd December in the city with participation of 40,000 people including municipal commissioner, mayor, municipal officials, employees, Councillors, representatives of voluntary organizations and others. AMC will collect only segregated waste from the source from December 3.

AMC had introduced segregation of waste at source on a pilot basis for two wards — Naranpura and Bodakdev, but the project failed to tick, as people refused to change their habit.

AMC collects 3500 mt waste every day through 1,000 waste collection vehicles. 900 tonne of this is used to make fertilizers, 1,000 tonne goes for recycling, however rest 1700 tonne is difficult to manage due to mixture of dry and wet waste. This makes garbage hill at Pirana dumping site even taller.
