Govt orders stoppage of work at Riverfront sports complex site after accident
December 23, 2019
Ahmedabad: The Director Industrial Safety and Health (DISH), which functions under the Labour and Employment department has ordered closure of work at the under-construction sports complex at Sabarmati Riverfront, where two workers had died in a wall collapse on Saturday.
Following a spot inspection of the site on Sunday, which revealed that the working conditions were unsafe, DISH ordered prohibitory order on construction work at the site as per provisions of the Gujarat Building and Other Construction Workers Act. The site belongs to Patel Infrastructure Limited.
“The prohibitory order, banning any further construction work at the sports complex site, has been issued considering the safety of the workers, as well as the general public. No construction activity will be allowed till adequate safety measures as prescribed under the rules are complied with by the contractor,” Labour and Employment department said.
Two female workers, viz. Ditaben Mangubhai (25) and Sumaliben Bhunsing (59), died in the wall collapse, while two other workers were injured and hospitalized.
The DISH inspection also showed that construction work at the site was going on since last December. However, the developer had not written to the Labour Inspector for registration of the construction site with it, in blatant violation of norms. DISH directed the developer Patel Infrastructure to register the site at the earliest and to provide evidence that guidelines regarding personal protective equipment are complied with.
