December 30, 2019
Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Service (AMTS) today said that it would take out another 96 buses on 16 routes from BRTS corridors from January 1 ie New Year day.
A statement by the AMTS today informed this.
Earlier on December 26, the AMTS had taken out 42 of its buses on 4 routes from the BRTS corridors.
The AMTS is doing so in phased manner to take out all of its 321 buses running on 41 routes involving BRTS corridors.
The first lot of 45 AMTS buses on 5 routes were taken out of the BRTS corridors on December 7.
As a formula of sorts to lessen the jams on the city roads, it was agreed upon in 2014 that the BRTS corridors would also be utilized for the 321 AMTS buses on 41 routes in the city. Both AMTS and BRTS comes under Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC)- the largest urban civic body in Gujarat. The then commissioner of police and municipal commissioner (also the ex-officio chairman of the BRTS) had agreed to the formula which was going on smoothly.
But recently the incumbent municipal commissioner cum BRTS chairman conveyed AMTS to remove all the buses from the corridors. Efforts were on to revert it could not happen.
Notably, in the wake of some accidents involving BRTS buses, the entry of other vehicles in the BRTS corridor has been made punishable offence with provision of fines too. The AMTS has a fleet of 700 buses that ply on around 150 routes in the city.
