Gandhinagar: The Congress party in Gujarat will take out a ‘pad yatra’ (foot march) to commemorate the 90th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s iconic Dandi March from Sabarmati Ashram to Dandi from March 12 to April 6.
Gujarat Congress president Amit Chavda said: “Congress party will commemorate the 90th anniversary of the Dandi March by taking out a march starting from Sabarmati Ashram to Dandi. Our interim president Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, Chief Ministers of the Congress-ruled States and senior party leaders will take part in the march.”
“80 workers each of Seva Dal from different states will join the march. Thousands of Congress workers will join the march from districts along the route. Party president Sonia Gandhi is expected to be present for the valedictory function of the march, while Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi will be present when the march is flagged off. Chief ministers of all Congress-ruled states and all national office bearers of the party will participate on different days of the march,” Chavda said.
Congress leaders had held discussions in this regard during their meeting in New Delhi on Tuesday in presence of Congress leaders Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, KC Venugopal, Ahmed Patel, Shakti Singh Gohil, Randeep Surjewala, Siddharth Patel, Amit Chawda, Bharat Singh Solanki, Madhusudhan Mistry, Deepinder Singh Hooda, Paresh Dhanani, Arjun Morwadiya, Lalji Chawla, Jitender Prasad and others.
Although Congress leaders maintain that the march is being organized to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, this is believed an organized effort to rejuvenate the party cadre ahead of the Rajya Sabha and panchayat polls this year.
Congress spokespersons Manish Doshi said, “Congress will take out the foot march from Sabaramti to Dandi to commemorate the anniversary of the Salt March taken out by Mahatma Gandhi from here. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is expected to come for the launch of the march, while Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra are also likely to join the march on different dates,” Doshi said.
Doshi said that during the march, the party aims to highlight the situation prevailing in the country.
“The march will highlight the prevailing situation in the country following introduction of Citizenship Amendment Act and Delhi riots,” he said.
