First plasma transfusion on Covid patient at SVP hospital after AMC – ICMR MOU

Ahmedabad: AMC (Amdavad Municipal Corporation) and ICMR (Indian Council of Medical Research) inked Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for plasma transfusion related study on Covid19 patients at SVP (Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel) hospital in the city.

Sharing the details, city municipal commissioner Vijay Nehra said, ‘for last two days Delhi based ICMR was in contact with AMC. After a video conference last night, all procedures of MoU between SVP and ICMR are completed and first Covid19 patient has been given plasma transfusion.’

‘The Chief Minister had directly spoken to union Health minister for ICMR protocol. The demand was granted. Second step was to identify a donor, taking consent, getting plasma, testing of plasma, search of potential recipients, approval to research protocol and trial procedure by ethics committee and final nod of ICMR. The entire process was completed,’ Nehra said.

The study will be led by Dr. Janak Khambholja of SVP hospital as principal investigator with Dr. Nlesh Suthar, Dr. Cherry Shah and Dr. Sanket Shah as team members.

Approval for a Study Centre for the same at SVP hospital has also been granted on fast track basis by ICMR after a video conference yesterday, Nehra said adding that this would be India’s first such study centre under which first plasma transfusion has been done.

He said, today the process of second recipient’s transfusion will kick off with a second donor already identified whose tests are underway.

The study being carried out is titled as Phase 2 open label randomized controlled trial to asses safety and efficacy of convalescent plasma to limit covid19 associated complication in moderate disease.
