By-polls for 8 vacant assembly seats in Gujarat on November 3

New Delhi: Polling for 8-seat assembly by-polls in Gujarat will take place on November 3. The Election Commission of India, today announced that by-polls of one Lok Sabha seat and 56 Assembly seats across 11 states including 8 assembly seats in Gujarat will take place on November 3. Counting of votes will take place on November 10.

All 8 poll-bound seats were won by Congress candidates in year 2017 general elections of the State assembly. Earlier this year, just ahead of Rajya Sabha elections, 8 Congress MLAs resigned from their seats and also from Congress party. Some of them have joined BJP and are promised party ticket to contest by-polls.

Ruling BJP had lost 3 out of 6 assembly seats in previous by-polls of assembly last year in the backdrop of a grand victory on all 26 Lok Sabha seats a few months ago. Learning the lessons from this, the party is no more overconfident this time.

This will be the first election season in the State under new State BJP chief CR Patil. For BJP, any number of win in 8-seat by-polls is clear gain, as all these seats were with Congress only. For Congress, good performance in these by-polls will boost morale of party cadres for local body elections that are also due by the end of this year.
