Bharat Bandh call fails to evoke response in Gujarat

Gandhinagar: Congress party supported ‘Bharat Bandh’ call has failed to evoke response in Gujarat. The impact of bandh has been limited to highway blockades at some stretches by Congress workers by burning tyres. However such obstructions were soon cleared by police and commuters.

The cities and towns are functioning routinely. Traffic and business in cities including Ahmdabad, Vadodara, Surat and Rajkot are functioning routinely. Even tire two cities such as Bhavnagar, Jamnagar, Anand etc are functioning in routine fashion. Small groups of Congress workers were seen in major markets in various cities to ensure bandh. However Policemen, present at such venues of symbolic protest detained Congress workers who were out to ensure bandh. Police detained Leader of Opposition Paresh Dhanani who was out in market to request shopkeepers to join bandh. While at most places, detentions were cordial, at some places minimum force had also to be used by police for detention of Congress workers.

Among those detained are also some Congress MLAs.

Gujarat Congress president Amit Chavda claimed, some people might not have joined bandh due to anti-farmers mentality or due to government pressure, but even after government’s pressure, police atrocities and preventive detentions of Congress leaders and cadres, the farmers have opted for bandh voluntarily.

Chief Minister Rupani in his speech at Mahesana slammed Congress party and its leader Rahul Gandhi.

Nationwide bandh call given by farmers’ unions mainly based in Punjab has been supported by opposition parties including Congress, AAP, DMK, SP, CPM, CPI, TRS, TMC, RJD, SAD, NCP, Gupkar Alliance, CPML, AIMIM, JMM, Shiv Sena, BSP and YSRCP. In Gujarat, Congress party has taken a leadership of bandh call. DeshGujarat
