Over 1.53 lakh cases pending in Gujarat High Court; Nearly 6,000 of them for more than last 15 years

Gandhinagar: There are a total 1,53,891 pending cases in Gujarat High Court as on 26th November 2021 out of which 5,971 cases are pending for 15 years or more, as informed in reply to a question regarding pending cases in Gujarat High Court in the winter session of Lok Sabha.

The 1,53,891 pending cases include 1,02,097 civil cases and 51,794 criminal cases. Similarly, the 5,971 cases pending for 15 years or more include 2,813 civil cases and 3,158 criminal cases.

It was further informed in the answer that the High Court Benches are established in accordance with the recommendations made by the Jaswant Singh Commission and judgment pronounced by the Apex Court in W.P.(C) No. 379 of 2000 and after due consideration of a complete proposal from the State Government which has to provide necessary expenditure and infrastructural facilities and the Chief Justice of the concerned High Court who is required to look after the day-to-day administration of the High Court. The proposal to be complete should also have the consent of the Governor of the concerned State, it stated.
