Jamnagar plant resumes generation of power from municipal waste

Jamnagar: The Jamnagar plant that generates power from waste material has resumed functioning and produces 6-7 megawatts of electricity daily. The plant had run into trouble after people started complaining about the noise, the foul smell and ash generated.

In 2017, Jamnagar had become the first city in Saurashtra to start work on an ultra- modern plant to generate power from waste material collected from all over the city but it had become very unpopular because the plant was making a noise as loud as fighter jets, which could be heard in an area of 2 square kilometers. Besides, the noise, people were also fed up of the amount of ash it used to generate and the stench that emanated from the plant.

People from ward no 2 and 4 along with 8 councilors had met municipal commissioner Vijay Kumar Kharadi personally and submitted a memorandum to him about their concerns over the functioning of the power plant.

Kharadi had then spoken to the company officials and warned them not to operate the plant without making necessary improvements. After the commissioner’s warning, the company has fitted silencers in the machinery, the stench is neutralized by spraying a certain chemical on the waste material while the chimney of the plant has been fitted with bag filters.

A spokesperson of the company informed that as of now 6-7 megawatts of electricity is being generated daily by burning 350 tons of waste material after making the necessary changes. DeshGujarat
