5,000 instances of stray dogs biting citizens in Ahmedabad every month
June 06, 2022
Ahmedabad: The stray dogs menace has been going on in Ahmedabad city for a long time now. In the last year itself, the municipal corporation has reportedly spent Rs 2.77 crores to sterilize over 30,000 dogs. However whether this figure is actual or there was a malpractice in the name of sterilization, is a question. As per a survey conducted in 2019, there are more than 2.10 lakh stray dogs in the city and almost 5,000 incidents of people getting bitten by them every month are reported. Despite this, the municipal corporation doesn’t take the work of sterilizing stray dogs seriously. The more effective option of capturing stray dogs and drop them in inhabited areas outside the city has been discontinued by AMC and all other civic bodies across the country due to the Supreme Court order.
The voluntary organizations, which undertake the task on behalf of the municipal corporation, are paid Rs 930 for each dog they sterilize even as complaints about the stray dogs in different areas of the city have always been rising.
Despite a high court order to bring the menace of stray animals in the city under control, there has been no change in the situation. There are complaints that the voluntary organizations that pick up these dogs for sterilizing them drop them off again in the same area. DeshGujarat
