Gujarat and Karnataka lead clean electricity transition in India: IEEFA

Gandhinagar: A joint report from the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) and Ember has revealed that Gujarat and Karnataka are the leading Indian states in terms of preparedness and commitment towards transitioning to clean electricity.

The report analyzed 16 Indian states that account for 90% of the country’s annual power requirement on four parameters. these parameters are based on the state’s ability to shift away from fossil fuel-based power, incentivize greener market participation, ensure power system reliability, and promote power sector decarbonization.

The report outlines focus areas for states to improve their preparedness for transition, such as exploiting wind and solar generation potential and deploying more energy storage solutions, such as batteries and pumped hydro, for better renewable energy integration.

The report recommends that states take a multi-dimensional approach towards the clean electricity transition and focus on areas such as renewable energy generation, energy storage solutions, demand-side management, strengthening power systems, and improving data availability and transparency.

The report also emphasizes the importance of introducing private sector participation and competition in the electricity sector and increasing states’ participation in green market mechanisms.
